Fifteen different activities available for students at the SFC

There are plenty of things for students to do on campus after class. Campus Recreation offers opportunities for students to participate in a wide variety of intramural sports, sport clubs, aquatics, informal recreational activities, family programs and special events.

The Vadalabene Center and Student Fitness Center are available to enrolled students at no charge. "Family Nights" take place on weekends and holidays when students, faculty and staff are able to bring their immediate families to the center at no charge. Memberships and guest passes can also be purchased.

The Student Fitness Center and Vadalabene Center offer:

- an indoor pool

- eight racquetball courts

four indoor courts for basketball, tennis, volleyball, roller hockey and indoor soccer

- a suspended jogging track

- a 4,000-square-foot weight room

- a 4,000-square-foot cardiovascular exercise room

- a 4,000-square-foot aerobic exercise room

shower and locker facilities

- a child-care facility

- a wellness resource lab

- a student social lounge with a wide-screen television

- outdoor equipment rental service

Campus Recreation also plans several outdoor recreation activities throughout the year. Canoeing, fishing, backpacking, sailing, hiking, rock climbing and scuba certification events are scheduled.

Trips are being planned to ski in Colorado, scuba dive in Florida and hike the Grand Canyon. More information on these trips is available at the Student Fitness Center reception desk. Students, faculty, alumni, staff and their guests can participate in these events at very affordable costs.

Members can participate in the intramural sports programs individually or as a team. The program offers soccer, floor hockey, volleyball and flag football leagues. There are also special events throughout the year such as a slam-dunk contest, strong man and woman contests, and tournaments in basketball, badminton, tennis and racquetball.

Intramural sports registration forms can be filled out at the Student Fitness Center front desk. Many of the activities are free of charge, but many of the team sports require a $20 entry fee and a $20 forfeit fee deposit.

The SIUE sport club program consists of student-run organizations that compete on a higher level than intramural sports. Many of the clubs travel and compete nationally.

Students can join an established club or they can see about starting their own. Currently, the program offers an ice hockey club, a martial arts club and a men's softball club. Contact Chad Rodgers, coordinator of Campus Recreation, at 650-3241 for more information on how to join.

The Wellness Center provides a variety of programs to assist individuals in making healthy lifestyle choices for little or no cost to members.

The Wellness Center conducts wellness, fitness and nutrition profiles to assess one's current lifestyle and create a personalized nutrition and fitness plan. Personal trainers are available for $75 to $85 for 10 one-hour sessions.

They offer weight room orientations, injury consultations, massage therapy and various presentations throughout the year on topics such as alcohol, drugs, sexual health, relationships and stress/time management.
