Students coming or returning to campus have a variety of activities to choose from thanks to Welcome Week.
Welcome Week, which runs from Friday, Aug. 18, to Saturday, Aug. 26, is filled with social events, informative meetings, free food, games and prizes all around campus. It also provides a way for new and returning students to get to know each other, the campus and what's new this year.
On Monday, the Global Prints Poster Sale began at 8 a.m. and will run all week, outside the north entrance of the Morris University Center.
Tuesday, students can hang out in the Stratton Quadrangle all day, or just between classes, during the Day on the Quad from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Day on the Quad includes informative booths, food, fun and games.
On Wednesday, there will be a Black Hawk Helicopter Landing and Demonstration. Students can tour the helicopter and learn about the SIUE Army ROTC program. It will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hairpin, between Peck and Rendleman halls.
Also, the Skywalk Food Court has its grand opening on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. Stop by and enjoy refreshments, giveaways, prizes and the opening of the newest place to eat on campus.
For more socializing, students can attend the Rock-a-Rama Block Party from 6 to 11 p.m. Wednesday at the Hairpin for games, music, food and prizes.
Sports fans can cheer for SIUE on Thursday, at the men's soccer game against Maryville University. The game is at 6 p.m. at Korte Stadium and there is no charge with a student identification card.
After the game, movie and cult buffs can experience the 7th Annual Rocky Horror Picture Show at 8 p.m. on Thursday, outside the south entrance to the MUC. The "Rocky Horror Picture Show" is a classic cult movie and audience members get to participate in the action by yelling, throwing props and dressing up like the characters. The event is free and props will be provided to the first 100 audience members.
Friday, there is an Ice Cream Cabaret, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Meridian Hall in the MUC. The event includes ice cream and entertainment from fellow faculty and students. The cost is $4 and it benefits the Staff Senate Scholarship.
To close off the week, University Center Board will host the 19th annual LateNighter. It starts at 7 p.m. Friday in the MUC. This popular event features sumo wrestling, a clown, karaoke, psychic readings, a character artist, games, prizes and a dance from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. It is open and free for all SIUE students, faculty and staff.
Finally, on Saturday, students can help with a volunteer project, join the volleyball challenge at noon on the west lawn of the MUC, and meet the greeks at the Welcome Back Party with the Greeks from 7 to 11 p.m. on the Quad.
