Get out of bed, and back into the groove

Brian Wallheimer
Editor in Chief

Class isn't so bad.

It's time to come back. Time to stand in that never-ending line for books, time to decide what looks safe to eat in the food court, time to find your classes and decide how to get all the way across campus in less than 10 minutes, and time to throw yourself back into the swing of things in this crazy place we call SIUE.

I hope everyone enjoyed their vacations, unless you were here all summer. Then I hope you enjoyed your three weeks off. It never seems like enough. Not for me anyway.

If you were here or somehow found a copy of the Alestle to read, you know what went on all summer. If not, you need to catch up on everything that is going on here.

A new president has been found. Dr. James Walker will take office in October. The Skywalk Food Court is open on the skywalk between Founders and Alumni halls. Renovations in Cougar Village are complete, Birger Hall is almost complete, the third residence hall is under construction and Pizza Hut Express has moved from the Center Court to Cougar Den in the basement of the Morris University Center.

That is just a bit of what we have been up to here at SIUE. I'm sure the fall and spring will bring even more changes. And just so you know, we'll be here to let you know what is going on in your world.

The first few weeks back are hectic, and if this is your first college semester, be ready. It's not really that bad; it's just a major change in day-to-day life. You'll get used to it soon enough.

Remember that your first class comes earlier than you expect. No matter how much you tell yourself five hours is enough sleep, it never is. And nothing will keep you awake during a boring lecture on a Monday morning, especially after only five hours of sleep. The coffee only goes so far.

Not all classes take role every day. It's a lot easier to stay in bed in the morning if you know you won't get in trouble for not showing up, but they do teach some things in those classes. It does a bit of good to show up now and then.

The geese do not discriminate. They leave their mark wherever they want. Some like to make a game out of dodging goose poop. I just like to stay away from it. Don't think the grass is safe from the poop either. You can't see it in the grass; That's what makes it dangerous. If you have no idea why I am babbling on about geese, you soon will.

Don't forget that college is supposed to be fun, too. There is a lot going on out here in the coming months. Look through this issue and you'll see what I am talking about. Support the events advertised and see what the college experience is all about.

There is always something going on here. Look in the Alestle or in the Life After Class booklet. Whether you're into sports or clubs, there is always something to do.

Like I said, we'll be here to let you know what's new and what's happening on campus. If we miss something or you think we need to cover something, let us know. We're here for you.

Other than that, have a safe and exciting semester and don't forget to read the Alestle.
