Experience greek life

Alestle Staff Report

Fraternities and sororities offer students a variety of social and educational experiences.

Greek life is at SIUE for new students who are away from home and need to make friends and to help students looking to learn organizational and leadership skills.

Students interested in joining a fraternity or sorority can find tables for almost every group during Welcome Week. Greeks will have information on their organizations and explain how interested students can pledge.

Greeks offer leadership opportunities through their chapters or in other capacities. Chapters have internal organization, which gives students opportunities to learn leadership and organizational skills. Many greeks are involved in other organizations at SIUE that allow them to take part in the leadership on campus.

Greeks also offer a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood among their members. Director of Greek Life John Davenport said friendships a person makes in a fraternity or sorority are usually for life.

Many activities and programs on campus are coordinated by fraternities and sororities. Often different fraternities and sororities come together to sponsor an event. This brings not only members of one chapter together, but many members of other organizations and chapters together.

Another major event in greek life is Greek Week. This is a week on campus when greeks come together for games and fun. The week helps promote unity in the greek society as a whole.

For more information on joining a fraternity or sorority, call the Kimmel Leadership Center at 650-2686. Booths will also be set up during Welcome Week and advertisements can be seen in many places all over campus....
