SIUE Constructors Club is the student chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America and is open to any SIUE student interested in the construction industry. The group is affiliated with the SIUE Department of Construction, housed in the new Engineering Building.
Club meetings generally involve food, and business is kept to a minimum. There is no membership fee, but "SIUE Constructors" T-shirts can be purchased. A traditional student vs. alumni softball game is held each fall (and traditionally, the alumni beat up on the students pretty badly). To make up for this, the alumni sponsor an annual golf tournament each spring to raise money to fund student trips to concrete competitions, paper presentations and construction management competitions. To interest the next generation of young people in engineering and construction, SIUE students and faculty have introduced local elementary and middle school children to floating concrete and paper bridges.
Although the SIUE construction program does not include any hands-on training in construction methods, many of the students bring these skills with them and put them to use in community service activities. This April, the group worked with the local Christmas in April chapter and repaired flooring and plumbing and repainted an Edwardsville mobile home. Also in April, the Constructors worked with Habitat for Humanity, placing and finishing the concrete basement slab of a new home in Alton.
