The Second Shift by Arlie Hochschild with Anne Machung

1) What’s the Holt’s story?  How does it inform us about the second shift

2) What does gender have to do with the second shift?

3) What’s the leisure gap?

4) How does gender ideology contribute to the second shift?

5) What is a family myth?

6) What is the stalled revolution?

7) How does gender help us interpret what men and women do and SHOULD do in the house?

Family Myth: A family myth is a lie that couples tell themselves in order to maintain harmony within the family

for example: A man has a traditional gender ideology in which men are supposed to be the provider and women are supposed to be at home.  A woman has the same gender ideology, however she has to work outside the home because they need the money.  A family myth would be:

A) the man claims that the money the woman makes isn’t really that important to the family, it just allows them frills like sending their kids to private schools.

B) The two claim that they divide work in half even though the woman does all the work at home and paid work while the man only does paid work.

for example: A man has an untraditional gender ideology.  He believes men should help in the home.  However, he works the swing shift (different hours different weeks).  The woman also does paid work but has a more traditional work schedule.  A family myth would be:

If the couple claims that the man can’t do any housework because he has such an odd working  schedule

A FAMILY MYTH IS NOT A SITUATION IN WHICH INEQUITY EXISTS.  A FAMILY MIGHT KNOW THAT A WOMAN DOES MORE WORK IN THE HOME AND OUTSIDE.  FOR EXAMPLE, IF A WOMAN HAS A JOB AND THEN COMES HOME AND COOKS, CLEANS AND TAKES CARE OF THE KIDS WHILE THE MAN COMES HOME AND WATCHES TELEVISION.  THIS IS NOT A FAMILY MYTH IF THEY BOTH ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS.  THIS IS NOT A FAMILY MYTH EVEN IF THE WOMAN IS ANGRY MOST OF THE TIME BECAUSE OF THE INEQUITY.   IN FACT, HER BEING ANGRY SHOWS THAT THERE IS NOT MYTH BECAUSE A MYTH IS SUPPOSED TO REDUCE CONFLICT AND CREATE HARMONY.

THIS ONLY BECOMES A FAMILY MYTH IF ONE OF THE PERSON’S IS UNHAPPY AND THEY PRETEND THAT THEY ARE NOT.

(So, if there is sexual division of labor in the house, this is NOT a family myth unless they make up a story of how there is no sexual division of labor.
